US Open Cup Update

I missed out on quite a bit of action recently by going camping, then a long work trip and finally getting really sick.  A lot has happened in the US Open Cup.

The New England Revolution will play the Harrisburg City Islanders tonite in the last quarterfinal to be settled.  One of the top MLS teams against the last USL-2 team alive.

The winner of that game will play the Carolina RailHawks who defeated the Richmond Kickers in their quarterfinal 1-0.

FC Dallas took the Charleston Battery to extra time before coming away with a 2-1 victory to advance to the semi-finals.

FC Dallas will play the Seattle Sounders who gave the Colorado Rapids a real beating in their quarter-final.  The Rapids were beat down by a final score of 5-0.  Whoaaa Colorado, whats up with that?  I’ve only notice one beating that was worse than that one, but that was a USL-1 team beating an USASA (3 tiers below USL-1) by the score of 10-0.  The Atlanta Silverbacks beat Azzuri by that score if anyone was wondering.

So at most 2 MLS teams will make it to the semi-finals, and at least 1.  Does this look bad for MLS or good for USL?

I was at the Seattle game last night, and I can say without a doubt that Seattle played some of the most beautiful soccer I’ve seen ever, anywhere — US, South America, Europe, ANYWHERE. The speed of play, the perfect passing and ball control, the almost telepathic knowledge of where teammates were going to be… It was amazing. They were also like that in the second half against Chivas in the last round. I think they needed the first half of that game to get their confidence up and convince themselves that they really are the real deal this year.– and they are.

Yes, the Rapids were awful last night. They couldn’t get anything going at all, and it got worse after Erpen was ejected. (They played dirty all night too, which didn’t endear them to anybody.) But that doesn’t take away from the fact that the Sounders are the real deal this year and could take it to any MLS team in the League this season.

Are you a Galaxy fan living in Seattle or did you just happen to be in Seattle for that game?

I added your link to the blogroll.

Galaxy fan living in Seattle. Or more accurately a recovering Eurosnob learning to love MLS by blogging on the Galaxy, since Seattle doesn’t have an MLS team yet.
