Watch USA vs Mexico Live

You might be looking for a place to watch USA vs. Mexico coming up in about 15 minutes.  This is kinda late notice – but better late than never.

You should be able to watch the game here live:

I have Dish Network and I will be recording the game on channel 838.  The game will be shown on mun2 which some providers are offering a free 1 day sneak peek today specifically for this game.  I don’t know who else is or isn’t offering mun2 for free today – but Dish Network is (I think) on channel 838.

Go USA!

MLS players going to Olympics

Peter Nowak named his sqaud for the Beijing Olympics. The team includes several current and former MLS players. Real Salt Lake, Toronto FC and Houston Dynamo are all losing 2 players to Nowak’s Olympic roster while the Columbus Crew, Chivas USA and the New England Revolution will be missing a single player to Nowak during the Olympics.

The Olympic competition is largely a U23 game – with the addition of 3 overage players. A surprise (to me at least) was the addition of Brian McBride rather than Landon Donovan. LA Galaxy coach Ruud Gullit warned that taking Donovan to the Olympics would be a bad idea due to the World Cup Qualifiers that will be going on in the upcoming months.

Here is the full squad:

Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Chris Seitz (Real Salt Lake)

Defenders: Patrick Ianni (Houston Dynamo), Michael Orozco (San Luis), Michael Parkurst (New England Revolution), Nathan Sturgis (Real Salt Lake), Marvel Wynne (Toronto FC)

Midfielders: Freddy Adu (SL Benfica), Michael Bradley (SC Heerenveen), Maurice Edu (Toronto FC), Benny Feilhaber (Derby County), Stuart Holden (Houston Dynamo), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Danny Szetela (Brescia Calcio)

Forwards: Jozy Altidore (Villareal), Charlie Davies (Hammarby IF), Brian McBride (None), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew)

Welcome to the better side of life

kivlehan was not a soccer fan just as recent as 2 years ago – before the 2006 world cup. You would have been crazy if you thought kivlehan was going to become a soccer.

Let me tell you kivlehan, there was a time when we weren’t able to see as much of the great game here in the United States. I remember in 1990 the World Cup was taking place in Italy and the United States had qualified for the first time in many years. My family never had cable tv before that summer. A bunch of the games were going to be shown on TNT of all channels. That was the deciding factor in my family getting cable tv – we had to watch the USA in the World Cup.

Things were different back then. The roster of US players was mostly college guys that were not playing top level professional soccer. There was no MLS. Our guys went over there and got spanked by Czechoslovakia – not Too dissimilar to the 2006 World Cup that you are familiar with. Then there was a tight game vs Italy (that one we lost) and another close loss – but back then it was Austria rather than Ghana.

Commercials were still a part of the TV broadcast. I remember watching one of Italy’s game coming back from a commercial to see a replay of a goal. That is a great system they have now to remove commercials! If I remember correctly I think there were 3 goals scored during commercial time at that world cup. But remember not every game was shown like they do today.

Four years later the World Cup was coming to the United States. We got tickets to see all 4 games in Detroit. Seeing a World Cup game live is something that everyone should be able to do before they die. I don’t think any other sporting event can compare. I’ve never been to the olympics (which might be close) – but the rest of the big sports in the US can’t compare. This time our guys were prepared a little better. We had a few players that made their way into the top leagues in Europe, but it was just a small handful at the time still.

Today I have hope that I’ll see the United States actually win a World Cup someday. It may not be for a long time, but I remain hopeful. So I’m glad I could read about your journey to becoming a soccer fan. I hope that you too (and everyone out there) gets to experience a World Cup game day. Especially if you get to see your own country play in that World Cup.

Future of US Soccer

Does the U-20 World Cup show an accurate vision of what is to come for national teams of the respective countries? From what I’ve seen so far I sure hope it is the case. I’m not convinced that it will happen though.

In case you have been stuck under a rock here is what has been happening. The United States U20′s tied South Korea before going on to victories over Poland and most recently Brazil. This was enough to win their group to advance to the knockout stages. Brazil finished the group in 3rd place and might not advance. Poland will advance with their 2nd place finish.

I didn’t know a lot about the history of this tournament so I did a little research. Argentina (5), Brazil (4) and Germany (1) have combined won the tournament 10 times. Each of these teams are multiple World Cup winners. Portugal (2), Spain (1), USSR (1) and Yugoslavia (1) have won the rest of the U20 world cups. Although these teams have never won a full World Cup, they are all pretty good full international sides.

I know the US has a long way to go if they even want to duplicate their best finish ever which was the semi-finals in 1989. I guess I won’t be ready to change my outlook for the US national team based on the U20 results. A lot of future stars have played in the tournament, but a lot of players also never make it to the full national team. But I might feel differently if the US does go on to with this U20 world cup.

I guess no matter what happens I’m happier thinking about the U20 world cup rather than Copa America.

Argentina Bitch Slaps Bob Bradley And US Team

Early there was hope that an upset of the highest order could have been in progress.  The US has gone up against Argentina within 10 minutes.

That hope didn’t last long at all, Argentina equalized almost right after they went down on the Eddie Johnson’s PK.  Then there was a long time that either team could have added a few but no more goal came in the first half.  The US looked pretty good and at time like the much better team, but couldn’t add another goal.

In the 64th minute Crespo broke through for Argentina to score his 2nd goal of the game, the one that would prove to be the winner.  From that point on it was all trouble for the US who eventually game up 2 more goal for the final score of 4-1.

Usually I like what Justin Mapp does on the field for the US.  I just shook my head each time he tried to take on Zanetti down the left wing.  I don’t think it ever worked out in Mapp’s favor.  I don’t know if no one told Justin who they were up against.  I guess its good to try though.  At times I was frustrated with Johnson and his un-willingness to take on Argentina’s defense.

The US team started out an inspired team that was not going to be intimidated by Argentina, almost as if no one had told them how big underdogs they were supposed to be.  But sometime in the 2nd half they realized that they were playing one of the best teams in the world, and their play showed it.  Suddenly Argentina was controlling everything that the US was doing a good job at in the first half.

Hopefully Monday will bring better things versus Paraguay.

USA: #1 In The World

I’m going to say this just a few hours before US MNT takes on Argentina tonite in Venezuela.  Remember that it is a young US team that will be playing tonite.

Last nite Mexico beat Brazil who is ranking #3 by official FIFA rankings.  We can say that would make Mexico the #2 team in the world.  Mexico also happens to be the #2 team in CONCACAF, who recently lost to the United States who then becomes the #1 team in the world.

I refuse to believe it isn’t true until I see someone beat them.  So far Bradley has 9 wins and 1 tie.  Thats a pretty good run for sure.

Gold Cup Champions – USA

It was one of the most exciting games in recent history.  What could be better than USA vs. Mexico for a major trophy like the Gold Cup?  I’m really feeling regret that I did not make the trip to Chicago to see this game and even the game against Canada last Thursday.

The US went down right before half time on a terrible piece of defending but Bob Bradley did not give up and made sure at half time that his players would not either.  Brian Ching battled his way into the box and got fouled which set up Landon Donovan’s record tying goal. He beat the Mexican keeper to the keepers left for his 34th international goal which tied Eric Wynalda’s record for US goal scoring history.  Later Benny Feilhabor pounded in the poor clearance from a corner kick.  It was a thing of beauty and stood up to be the game cup winning goal!

Late in the game there were chances for both sides to add goals.  Tim Howard came up with a spectactular save and Beasley blew a completely open goal by knocking it off the crossbar after Landon sent him a perfect chance.  Ching also worked hard to create a great chance which he knocked up the near upright.  In the end it didn’t matter as Tim Howard saved the day and kept Mexico in 2nd place.

CONCACAF Gold Cup Results

The United States has been doing okay. Points-wise they couldn’t be any better, 6 points for 2 games and haven’t given up a goal yet. They could have been more impressive in their wins, but they are still wins!

As a fan of US Soccer, i have to say hahahahahahahahaha.

Okay, That group is home to 3 of my least favorite teams around the region. Mexico our rivals, Honduras is home to my least favorite player ever, and I just remember Panama being a real cheap, dirty, diving, faking injury type of team during World Cup qualifying leading up to Germany 2006. So I hope Cuba somehow wins the group and they decide to only take one team from that group. Unfortunately Cuba will probably finish up in last place.

How great would a USA vs Mexico final be though? What would your ideal final be?
