MLS All Star roster is completed

Coach Steve Nicol added 5 players to the MLS All Star roster and commissioner Don Garber added his 2 commissioner picks to the squad that will face West Ham.

Nicol added Pablo Mastroeni, Juan Pable Angel, Jim Brennan, Christian Gomez and Pat Onstad. Garber choose Edson Buddle and Dwayne De Rosario.

So this is what the full squad looks like:

Goalkeeper: Pat Onstad (Houston Dynamo), Matt Reis (New England Revolution)

Defenders: Jim Brennan (Toronto FC), Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards), Frankie Hejduk (Columbus Crew), Michael Parkhurst (New England Revolution)

Midfielders: David Beckham (Los Angeles Galaxy), Cuauhtémoc Blanco (Chicago Fire), Dwayne De Rosario (Houston Dynamo), Christian Gomez (Colorado Rapids), Shalrie Joseph (New England Revolution), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Pablo Mastroeni (Colorado Rapids), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew)

Forwards: Juan Pablo Angel (forward, New York Red Bulls), Edson Buddle (Los Angeles Galaxy), Kenny Cooper (FC Dallas), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy)

The bold names could be on an Olympic roster – so alternates will be named by Nicol soon.

Who is most deserving that isn’t on that list? Emilio? Schelotto?

Who would likely replace those 3 if they are not able to compete?

Christian Gomez moves west to join the Colorado Rapids

Well this is old news but I thought I’d still say a little something.

Former MLS MVP, 3 time All-Star, and Best XI – Christian Gomez will start out the 2008 season with the Colorado Rapids.  Gomez has been in the league for 3 season and he is the leading point scorer for that span of 3 seasons.  In that time he has recorded the 2nd highest mark in both goals and assists, trailing Taylor Twellman and Landon Donovan respectively.

Gomez will join MLS All-Star and sometimes US National team member Pablo Mastroeni in the middle.  Mastroeni will do the defensive work in the middle, while Gomez will supply the attacking out of the middle.  The partnership between Mastroeni and Gomez could prove to be one of the best in all of Major League Soccer if they are able to work well together.

Rapids fans must be excited about the addition to Christian Gomez for this upcoming season.

Chicago Fire drop top seeded DC United out of the playoffs

After the Chicago Fire’s 1-0 win at their home in Toyota Park they had to go to DC, one of the toughest places to play in all of MLS.  Expectations were high for DC United even though they were coming into the game down by a goal.

Chad Barret and Chris Rolfe both scored for the Fire in the first half and the season appeared to be just about over for DC United being down 3-0 on aggregate.  The holders of the Supporters’ Shield was not ready to give up quite that easily.  DC came out and tied the game up in the second half with goals from Clyde Simms and Christian Gomez and pushed hard for the third goal to tie the series.  Christian Gomez even scored the series tying goal in the 92nd minute, but it was rules that he handled the ball prior to the goal.  The replay showed it was probably a good call but in real time I had no idea why the ref was not allowing the goal.

The game ended 2-2 which was enough to send Chicago through to the conference finals on a 3-2 aggregate score.

MLS ESPY Award Nominees

The nominees in the category of Best Major League Soccer Player at the ESPYs have been announced.  I don’t know how much of a season these awards are supposed to cover.  Being that the award show takes place on July 16th it seems odd that they would be based on this current season, and it is kinda late to give awards for last season, so maybe it covers anything that happened in they year 2006, or possibly just the past year since July 2006.

The nominees are Jeff Cunningham, Christian Gomez, Landon Donavan and Matt Reis.  If the award covers the past season, I think it goes to Jeff Cunningham.  Gomez was the MVP last year, but that is different than a best player award.  Cunningham was the leagues top goal scorer on a bottom of the league team.

Who do you think deserves the award?

Where was Christian Gomez tonite?

While watching the CCC game tointe between Chivas and DC United at one point I thought to myself “Where the hell is Christian Gomez?”.  He didn’t seem too involved during the 2nd half.

Around the 80th minute there were a couple minutes where DC didn’t even get a touch on the ball.  I thought for sure the game was going to end with a 10 minute game of keep away that was dominated by Chivas.  The weird thing about it was that it seemed DC didn’t really care.  I guess maybe the altitude was getting to them at the end, you think?

I’m pretty sure I have never been so mad to see DC United lose.  As long as the Dynamo advance to the final, I’ll get over it.

What a goal scored by Jamie Moreno!  How long is that guy gonna keep up a high level of performance?  Probably until he’s about 50 years old!

I guess I’ll just be looking forward to Thursday nite.  Go DYNAMO!
