MLS Goal of the Year rivalry

The voting for MLS goal of the year is down to 5 finalists. That list of the 5 finalists does not contain the clear winner in my mind which was Gallardo’s full volley from an impossible (well at least tough) angle. That is a different story though.

The KC Wizards official blog has asked readers to vote for anyone other than NYRB goalkeeper Danny Cepero’s goal.

The Red Bulls Reader responds and says they want to vote for Danny’s goal 200 times.

I have to agree with the Wizards on this one. The Cepero goal was an amazing goal but here is my thought. If the opposing goalkeeper had just stood on his line he could have just caught the ball. It was more of a mistake from the other keeper than a great goal.

Watch all the goals and try to imagine what they would be like if there was no defense or goalkeeper on the field. What would the goal look like if a video editor could take out all the defense? Who gets my vote then? Blanco.

Don’t forget to go vote yourself – even if you think Cepero should win.

Of course Red Bulls Reader will try to tell people to vote for Red Bulls, and of course KC will be jealous that they failed at the first playoff hurdle and although they had a slightly better record than NY, NY is in MLS Cup.

Regarding the actual goal, I don’t care if it was due to the goalie messing up, Cepero kicked the ball, it was on frame, and it hit the back of the net. It was an amazing moment for him and for MLS goalkeepers. It was his first MLS match, and the first goal scored by a GK from open play. The fact that it doesn’t take as much skill as some of the other goals scored is not the issue. The award is “Goal of the Year” not “Most Skillfully Taken Goal of the Year”. Cepero gets my vote(s) for being such an incredibly moment both to watch and for those involved.

Hey – thats fair. I understand that some people would vote for that goal for the reasons you give.

It was an amazing goal, but I’m gonna vote for something that you could say no goalkeeper would have stopped. This was not the case for Cepero’s goal – most goalkeepers probably would not have allowed that ball to reach the back of the net.

Sorry NY fans, but Cepero’s goal was a disgrace to the league. That a goalkeeper could be that pathetic – relax, I’m talking about the other dude – reflects very poorly on the quality of talent in MLS. Belongs in MLS bloopers more than GOTY. That is all!
