MLS Players in the World Cup

As the Sounders and DC United prepare for their Thursday night MLS game I started to think about what the list of MLS players in the World Cup would look like.  The list is much smaller than it was in 2006 much due to the increasing number of Yanks leaving MLS to play in other countries.  Let me know if I missed anyone.  I just browsed through the whole list of World Cup rosters and picked these guys out.

Chivas USA
Jonathan Bornstein

Kansas City Wizards
Roger Espinoza (Honduras)

LA Galaxy
Landon Donovan
Edson Buddle

New York Red Bulls
Andrew Boyens (New Zealand)

Real Salt Lake
Robbie Findley

So watching Seattle Sounders FC and DC United going at it is exciting, I can’t keep my mind off the games that we’ll see tomorrow morning.  Don’t miss South Africa vs Mexico, coverage starting at 8:30am (central time) on ESPN and then France vs Uruguay at 1:30pm.  I’m so excited I might not sleep tonight.

Sounders FC lose big to Galaxy – offer refund to season ticket holders

The Seattle Sounders have sent a message that they won’t tolerate more beatings like the 4-0 the Galaxy put on them last week. They’ve offered refunds to all season ticket holders in the form of a one game credit if they renew their season tickets for next year.

Maybe the Sounders had decided they were going to reduce renewed season ticket prices anyway and they just decided to wait for something like this to use as a reason.

Do you think this is a good idea? The best possible outcome for the Sounders is that it actually motivates the team to perform better in the future and gives fans a little bit of satisfaction. The worst case is that the fans expect this treatment anytime the Sounders lose big like this and get mad when they find it won’t be the normal action.

Maybe the fans will just see it as a way to get more renewal of season tickets and it won’t affect the team or the ticket sales in any way.

All Seattle Sounders FC goals

As the preseason rages on you can enjoy every goal from the first season of Seattle Sounders FC right here!

How Long can the Seattle Sounders FC stay perfect?

Just a couple years ago I remember wondering how long it would take before Toronto FC would score their first goal.  They went 4 games before they got a goal which also proved to be their first ever win in a 3-1 victory over Chicago Fire.  When Seattle Sounders FC started their inagural season 3 weeks ago they didn’t take long to get that first goal.  Since then they haven’t stopped scoring and they also boast the best goals against in the league as they have not been scored on yet.

If both the Sounders and Chivas USA can get victories today they will face each other next week as the battle of the last teams to get 3 points from each game.

So how long can the Seattle Sounders FC keep up the perfect record?

What is going on in Major League Soccer?

The Houston Dynamo are going to into Mexico with after a 1-1 tie in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal. The Dynamo play Atlante FC Tuesday at 8PM (Fox Soccer Channel). Houston is the only remaining MLS team in the competition. Don’t miss this one.

David Beckham has been doing good in Italy and every day there is a new story about how he is never coming back to play for the Galaxy. I don’t know if anything is certain in this situation – but sounds like he may finish the season with AC Milan and then come back to the Galaxy for the 2nd half of the MLS season.

Brand new to the league Seattle Sounders FC will open the season against MLS Cup runners up New York Red Bulls. They will only remain the new team for a single season. I had plans to get out to Seattle for that season opener, but my plans changed and I won’t be able to get there until the day after they play the Red Bulls. Sad day for me.

In totally unrelated to MLS news I’ve started a new job that will take up a lot more of my time. I will likely be looking for others to write on this website. I am going to have a revenue sharing program that will allow writers to make money by writing MLS articles here. Contact me if you are interested in writing on the site or stay tuned for more details.

Kasey Keller and Clint Mathis coming back to the US

Both former US National team players Kasey Keller and Clint Mathis are leaving their European clubs in order to head to the United States to play in Major League Soccer.

Kasey Keller began his career with the Portland Timbers 19 years ago. Since then he has spent some time with 7 different European clubs. Now Keller is the 2nd man on the brand new Seattle Sounders FC roster.

Clint Mathis has played with several MLS teams already in his career. His time in Major League Soccer included a poor season with Real Salt Lake in their first year of existence. Now Real Salt Lake is in first place in the West and they have re-acquired Mathis after he left MLS to play in Greece. Mathis played in 8 games and scored 1 goal for Greek club Ergotelis.

MLS vs USL in US Open Cup Final

We will have one MLS team and one USL team in the US Open Cup Final this year. Two MLS powerhouses will play each other in one semi-final while two USL teams will do battle in the other semi-final.

The New England Revolution beat Crystal Palace Baltimore on PKs after a 1-1 draw to move into the semis with DC United who beat fellow MLSers Chicago Fire.

On the other side of the tournament we had the Charleston Battery beat FC Dallas 3-1 and the Seattle Sounders beat the Kansas City Wizards 6-5 on PKs after a scoreless draw.

This will be only the 3rd time since the beginning of Major League Soccer that a non MLS team has advanced to the final. In 1996 DC United beat the Rochester Raging Rhinos 3-0 in the final. Three years later the Rochester Raging Rhinos made it to the final again and this time came out victorious with a 2-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids. Since that game the final has seen nothing but MLS teams – until now.

US Open Cup round of 16 results

A couple MLS teams dropped out of the US Open Cup last night to lower league opponents. Here are all the results:

Crystal Palace Baltimore 2 -0 New York Red Bulls

Richmond Kickers 0 – 3 New England Revolution

Cleveland City Stars 1 – 4 Chicago Fire

Rochester Rhinos 0 – 2 DC United

Miami FC Blues 1 – 2 FC Dallas

Charsleston Battery (4-3 on PKs) 1 – 1 Houston Dynamo

Carolina Railhawks 2 – 4 Kansas City Wizards

Seattle Sounders 2 – 0 Chivas USA

So we are left with 5 MLS teams, a single USL-2 team and a pair of USL-1 teams. This is what the quarterfinals look like for next week. Both the Revolution and DC United will not host these games at their normal home field. Dallas will be at Pizza Hut Park for their game.

Crystal Palace Baltimore at New England Revolution

Chicago Fire at DC United

Charleston Battery at FC Dallas

Kansas City Wizards at Seattle Sounders

US Open Cup Update

The third round of the US Open Cup is upon us.  There are 8 MLS teams remaining in the tournament – each of which will face a non-MLS team.

Three teams from the USL Second Division have made it to the round of 16.  These teams all face MLS teams in this round.  Here are those matchups:

Crystal Palace Baltimore vs. New York Red Bulls

Richmond Kickers vs. New England Revolution

Cleveland City Stars vs. Chicago Fire

The remaining lower level teams all came from the USL First Division:

Rochester Rhinos vs. DC United

Miami FC Blues vs. FC Dallas

Charsleston Battery vs. Houston Dynamo

Carolina Railhawks vs. Kansas City Wizards

Seattle Sounders vs. Chivas USA

The previous round saw the exit of 8 more USL First and Second Division teams along with the only team from outside USL to make it that far – Hollywood United.  Hollywood United are a part of the United States Adult Soccer Association.
