2009 MLS Regular Season Schedule Is Here

Yesterday the 2009 Major League Soccer regular season schedule was announced. We already knew the first couple weeks of the schedule, but here is week #1 of the upcoming season.

Thursday March 19
New York Red Bulls Seattle Sounders FC 8:00 p.m.
Saturday March 21
Columbus Crew Houston Dynamo 7:00 p.m.
Chicago Fire FC Dallas 7:30 p.m.
Toronto FC Kansas City Wizards 7:30 p.m.
Colorado Rapids Chivas USA 9:30 p.m.
New England Revolution San Jose Earthquakes 9:30 p.m.
Sunday March 22
D.C. United Los Angeles Galaxy 2:00 p.m.

As I’m looking through the schedule I wonder the reasoning for such a scattered list of days for games. Some weeks have games on Wednesdays, some have games on Thursdays, some have games on Fridays, some have games on Wednesdays and Fridays, some on Wednesdays and Thursdays… Of course most games are played on Saturdays and most of the weeks have the usual game or two on a Sunday but not all weeks have Sunday games.

Maybe I should be asking what is wrong with Monday and Tuesday.

I’ve always thought MLS should have more of a regular schedule like the NFL does. A consistent TV schedule would be beneficial. I’ve said it before but I know people who are almost MLS fans that say they’d watch more if they knew a game was going to be on at X time once a week.

I have to quit complaining about the schedule now because I’m really excited about the start of the season. I’ve not kept up with the MLS world a lot over the past couple of months but things should get moving around here again soon!

What do you think of the crazy Wednesday/Thursday/Friday schedule?

In Sweden we have this type of schedule too and I think it would be a lot easier and more interesting to follow if more games are played at the same time, or at least the same weekday. I believe the reason might be that the same broadcaster here in Sweden wants to broadcast more games live than one or two per week. If all games were played at the same time you’d only be able to see one game live. But I still think that’d be better. Soccer has a lot to learn from Football, for example the respect of referees etc.

What would be nice is if they just kept the same schedule from week to week. Then you could just know that at 7PM on Thursday nights there is a game. Then games are at 1PM and 4PM on Saturday. Something like that I think would be ideal.

I don’t want to have to get out a schedule every time I want to watch a game. Now I don’t even know what days I have to check the schedule.

Damn, that sound’s so easy if you think about it.
