Brian McBride coming to Major League Soccer?

Brian McBride recently announced that he would not be returning to Fulham for another season in the English Premiership, and that he wants to return to the United States.  Right now Toronto FC would have the rights to get McBride because they have the highest allocation ranking due to their last place finish in the league last year.

So would McBride be coming back to play in Toronto?  A more likely situation would be that he ends up at the Chicago Fire.  McBride grew up near Chicago and has said that he’d like to return to his home.  So Chicago would likely have to make a deal with TFC to get the rights to McBride unless TFC wanted to pass on him in order to keep the top allocation spot open in case someone better comes around.  I can’t imagine they’d see someone better than McBride coming into MLS this season.

The Chicago Fire are currently tied at the top of the league and looking pretty good.  With the addition of Brian McBride they could be a very dangerous team looking for another MLS Championship.  What do you Fire fans think?  I’d be quite happy to see McBride joining my team.

Is there any chance that McBride would end up anywhere other than Chicago?  Would he go back to his former team – Columbus Crew?

How much does it cost to sponsor an MLS team?

The newest team in the league already has a sponsorship deal. Seattle will be sponsored by Microsoft and XBox 360 Live for $20 million over the first 5 years of the team’s existence.

Just off the top of my head these are the other teams that have jersey sponsorship deals:

LA Galaxy – Herbalife
DC United – Volkswagon
Real Salt Lake – Xango
Columbus Crew – Glidden
New York – Red Bull
Chicago Fire – Best Buy
Houston Dynamo – Amigo Energy
Toronto FC – BMO
Chivas USA – Comex

Did I miss any? What would be good sponsors for the remaining teams that don’t have a company logo on the front of their shirts?

Edited: Thanks ArteEtLabore for pointing out the last two that I didn’t think of earlier this afternoon.

Toronto FC move closer to CONCACAF Champions League

Tononto FC is one step closer to qualifying for the first CONCACAF Champions League.  TFC is involved in a 3 team playoff which will determine who represents Canada in the regional tournament.  Last night Marco Velez scored the only goal of the game in the 72nd minute to give TFC a 1-0 victory over USL side Montreal Impact.  The Vancouver Whitecaps are the other team in the three team tournament.

Tornoto FC did have some bad news in the game.  The teams top scorer Danny Dichio was injured and left the game in the first half.  It was a groin injury and the amount of time they expect him to miss is unknown, if he misses any further games.  It doesn’t sound too bad.

Major League Soccer in Montreal with Steve Nash

NBA superstar Steve Nash was recently in Montreal to discuss the possibility of a future MLS team making it their home.  Nash has been a soccer player and involved in soccer during his basketball career.  He is an investor in the women’s professional league that is set to start up next year.

Nash made the trip with the MLS commissioner and president along with Jeff Mallett.  Mallett is Yahoo’s former CEO and also and investor in the women’s professional league.  It sounds like they are talking with the owners of the Montreal Impact about the possibility of moving them into MLS sometime in the future.

Would this put Montreal in line to join MLS after St. Louis?  Are these guys thinking about adding another team the year after Philly?

An odd turn of events

Like much of the current MLS season, last night was a little bit odd.

Expansion teams are supposed to suck – unless you are the Chicago Fire.

So last night the new San Jose Earthquakes, the expansion team, beat the old Earthquakes and 2 time defending MLS champion Houston Dynamo 2-1. This win for the Earthquakes puts last years Supporters’ Shield winner (DC United) into last place.

Meanwhile the Columbus Crew are still on top of the league. The Crew have been miserable since 2004.

It sure is going to be an exciting season!

Thierry Henry Rumors

Where will Theirry Henry be next year? Rumors were New York, now they are LA and Seattle. Some say he will still be in Barcelona and maybe has already agreed to stay in Barcelona. How could the Galaxy fit him on their team? Why would he go to an expansion team? New York seems the most likely to me, but is that even a rumor anymore of have they claimed they are not even interested anymore? I can’t keep up with the Henry MLS rumors anymore…

LA Galaxy

Where do you think the French striker will be playing a year from now?

Donovan going for cap #100!

Thanks to Nicole for pointing out my terrible blogging skills on the previous post. I mentioned that Beckham could earn his 101st cap for England but didn’t mention that Donovan may get his 100th cap for the US in the same game.

Nicole pointed out that Donovan would be the 4th youngest player ever to reach the 100 cap mark. I wondered who made it quicker and some quick research gave me 3 names I’d never heard before. Cha Bum-Kun got to 100 for South Korea at age 24 in 1997. Then in 1998 both Sami Al-Jaber and Mohammed Al-Deayea got to 100 caps for Saudi Arabia at age 25. Donovan turned 26 in March.

You probably know that Landon Donovan is the all time leading scorer for the US Men’s Nats with 35 goals. Who have his goals come against. Looks like Cuba is the favorite target of Landon many thanks to a 4 goal game in 2003. Here is the full list of how many goals Landon has scored against other countries:

6 – Cuba

4 – Mexico, Panama

3 – Ecuador, El Salvador

2 – Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, Honduras

1 – Grenada, Jamaica, Korea Republic, Paraguay, Poland, Sweden, Venezuela, Wales

I want to see some countries like England, Argentina and Spain show up on that list soon!

A little know fact about Landon is that he played goalkeeper one summer. During his summer in goal he bought a pet bird and named him Tony – after US goalkeeper Tony Meola. Ok – I just made that one up, that was actually me that named a bird after Tony Meola.

Sorry Nicole – thanks for pointing out my own stupidity. Keep reading, there will be much more crap for you to catch!

3 MLS players going to England

US coach Bob Bradley has named his team that will face England on May 28th.  The roster is dominated by European based players who are not in the middle of a regular season, while only including 3 MLS players.  Landon Donovan, Brad Guzan, and Ricardo Clark are the MLS representatives on the team.

David Beckham is also on the England roster for the game which will potentially be his 101st cap for England.

The game will be played at Wembly on May 28th.

MLS agrees to partnership deal with Barcelona

Yahoo! Sports reports that Major League Soccer has entered a partnership deal with European powerhouse Barcelona. The deal will bring Barcelona to the US for 6 exhibition matches over the next 5 years.

I have to assume they would be coming to play MLS teams rather than other big teams from outside of MLS. If they were coming to play other teams I don’t see any positives for Major League Soccer in that deal. How much does a Barcelona vs. LA Galaxy exhibition game benefit MLS.

Maybe the Galaxy is the exception because people want to see Golden Balls – but when Barcelona comes to play the Colorado Rapids, they probably draw more fans than the Rapids do.  Obviously ticket and TV money is going to be nice, but what else is there?

Maybe there is more involved than just the 6 exhibition games that simply wasn’t mentioned in the article.  If it is just the 6 exhibition games why not just call it that?  I think a partnership would involve more than just a few friendly games.  What do you think?  Who has more to gain from this partnership?
