LA Galaxy Own Goal

I’ve read a couple articles out in the blogosphere about the SuperLiga finals last night and several of them refer to an own goal by Peter Vagenas.  I noticed also that MLSnet.com’s box score shows the own goal credited to Vagenas.

I did actually watch the game and I was pretty sure is was not Vagenas who scored Pachuca’s only goal.  I never knew who it was due to watching the game on the Spanish channel.  It looked like it might have been Carlos Pavon but I’m not sure about that.  I do know that the scorer of the own goal looked nothing like Peter Vagenas.  Maybe it was Pavon, he might have just forgotten which goal he was going to.  It did look like one of those own goals where the defender was actually trying to score.

Did anyone see who it really was?  Or was I dreaming and it really was Vagenas?

Pachuca Figured Out Landon Donovan’s Finger Kissing Thing

First of all in case you didn’t see the SuperLiga final last nite this is how it went:

LA gave away and own goal in the first half and Beckham went off with what I hear now is a sprained knee (I watched on TeleFutura but I don’t speak spanish). The Galaxy dominated parts of the 2nd half and both teams were unlucky to not score several times. Chris Klien scored in the 92nd or so minute on an awesome bicycle kick on a poorly cleared ball. Both teams were unlucky again to not score in extra time. In the penalties it came down to the 10th shooter with the penalties all tied up.

If Donovan can make one PK the SuperLiga belongs to the Galaxy. He gets up and does his usual weird finger kissing thing but this time I think the keeper knew what to watch for. He kissed fingers on his left hand more times than fingers on his right hand, which meant he was going to his left (keeper’s right).

That shot didn’t lose the game, but it could have won the game, so it was on to one at a time. Pachuca scored the next one before Abel Xavier sent one wide to give the first SuperLiga to Pachuca.

FC Dallas Gets Their DP: Denilson

FC Dallas will likely have Denilson available for their next game.  Denilson is the latest in the trend of using the brand new Designated Player Rule that was put into effect just this season.

With the addition of the Brazilian to the FC Dallas roster he becomes only the 4th World Cup winner to play in MLS.  Lothar Matthaus, Branco and Youri Djorkaeff all played for the NY/NJ MetroStars.

When Denilson is officially added to the roster another senior international player will have to leave to make room.  They already have their 4 senior internationals on the team and Adrian Serioux is one likely choice to leave.  He is from Canada, where Toronto FC could really use some help.  Maybe we’ll see something between TFC and FC Dallas coming up soon?

What Is Wrong With ESPN?

ESPN2 is supposed to be showing Galaxy vs. Chivas right now, for the past half hour actually this game is supposed to have been on ESPN2.  I’m only writing because the game is not being shown.  A WNBA game is just heading into the third overtime.

Normally I wouldn’t think too much of it, I’d switch it over to ESPN2Alternate which they have just for situations like this.  But I switch over to ESPN2Alternate to see what?  The same WNBA game that is on ESPN2.  WTF is the point of that.

Again on a normal night I might not be so surprised but ESPN sure wants to make such a deal out of the englishman that will be starting for the Galaxy tonight.  But they can’t take a freaking WNBA game off of the alternate channel even.

For those of you that don’t know, WNBA is womens basketball.

Jamie Moreno Breaks Career Goal Record

Jamie MorenoLast night Jamie Moreno scored his 109th career MLS goal as DC United took down the New York Red Bulls 3-1. This moved him past current Real Salt Lake head coach Jason Kries for the most career MLS goals. Ante Razov is up there over the 100 mark and either of these guys could add a lot more to that total.

Who do you think will retire with the goal scoring crown, and how high will that tally be by that time?

Toronto FC: Down And Out?

Toronto FC is 6 points down from the last playoff spot currently held by the Columbus Crew.  Mo Johnston still thinks the playoffs are a realistic goal.

They also have 2 other teams above them still trying to get into that last playoff spot and Mo still thinks the playoffs are a possibility.

A former scoring champion and all around good striker Jeff Cunningham is now out for the rest of the season and Mo is still hoping for playoffs.

TFC’s only representative in this years all star game, Ronnie O’Brien is now also out for the remainder of the season.  All the while Mo is thinking his team should make the playoffs still.

Other TFC fans are not quite as optimistic as Mo has been.

Jozy Altidore Writes Blog For New York Times

Jozy Altidore must have been thrilled the way this past weekend’s game against the Galaxy and specifically David Beckham ended up. I’m guessing based on his first post to a blog he is writing for the New York Times.

http://goal.blogs.nytimes.com/author/jaltidore/

Jozy sounds like quite a big Beckham fan. I’m sure it happens a lot if professional sports where a younger player had been a big fan of one of his current opponents. It must not have had any negative effect of Jozy on the field that day, he did score 2 goals and the Red Bulls went on to a 5-4 win.

It should be cool to see what he has to say. And Jozy, if you want to write here at the MLS Fan Blog, drop me an email, I’ll set up you up anytime. If fact anyone playing in the MLS can stop by and write a guest post if you want.

I Hear This Galaxy Red Bulls Game Was The Game Of The Year

I had the DVR set to record all MLS games it finds. Saturday my dad was in town for a poker tournament. We were out at the tournament all nite. I find out later that the DVR for some reason did not record the Galaxy/Red Bulls game for me. Now I hear this was the game of the season so far.

I understand that a lot of New Yorkers care more about Beckham than they do about their own Red Bulls, but it is unfortunate. So this game had everything, a lot of Beckham fans, and a lot of scoring, you know to satisfy those American Football fans who always whine about there not being enough scoring in soccer.

It is too bad that will probably be the last game in New York that has either a crowd like that or a score like that. Regular fans will go back to being regular fans and someday home game ticket sales will not spike for any one team coming to town.

It is too bad that I did not get to see this game.  Fu&#$%! DVR…  Gotta look forward to the SuperClasico this Thursday nite on ESPN2!

Colorado Drops Revolution

I couldn’t have been more wrong on my Thursday Prediction just hours ago.

First of all as Mr. Fish pointed out, tonite’s game was actually not on ESPN2 for some reason, so I didn’t see the game.  Thanks for the correction Mr. Fish.

Secondly, the Rapids put a whooping on the Revolution.  Who (besides Rapids fans) would have ever guessed that?

Jovan Kirovski scored a pair of goals in the first half and Omar Cummings via Colin Clark dropped in a 3rd closer to the end of the game.  3-0 was the final score.

Another ESPN2 Thursday Prediction

Prediction Thursday has been missing for quite a while. Frequent blogging has been kinda something of the past as well. I hope to pick up the pace on both of them in the future.

2 – 0

There you have it.  New England is the class of the league, Colorado is in the slums.  Even playing at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park I think the Revolution have a big advantage.   Of course something strange could happen, like Taylor Twellman scoring an own goal and the only goal of the game for a Rapids 1-0 victory, but DeRosario already took care of that once this year.

My MFLS team is back into first place so I’ve got some more motivation than I have in the past few weeks!
