Long weekend

I hope you all had a good long weekend. Mine was exhausting and then work was even more so when I got back. A lot of exciting stuff went down while I was out of town and then locked in my office.

Beckham may be missing from the Galaxy if he gets called back to England for some Euro 2008 qualifiers.

Then there is talk of him going on loan to Newcastle (or other European club) after the MLS season, but Frank Yallop says it won’t happen and I doubt it myself.

The Kansas City Wizards proved that they are no joke. Going down two-nil to the top team in the league usually spells trouble, but the Wizards did it and came out on top. Eddie Johnson notched a hat trick in the game. It is official, his sports psychologist is paying off big time!

Juan Pablo Impresses

Tonite was my first chance to see Juan Pable Angel in action, and he was impressive.  Two goals and an assist tonite, 2 assists and a goal last weekend, possibly player of the week two weeks in a row.  Thats a good start for player of the month award, and if Eric Wynalda is right, possibly MVP.

I do have to agree with Wynalda.  It is way to early too early to start thinking about an MVP, but Angel looked to have so much class on the field that the thought has to be there.  I’m excited to see the Red Bulls play again soon, as long as Angel is in the starting lineup.

Now that they’ve got rid of Guevara, added Mathis, Reyna and Bruce, I’ll proabably even cheer for them again.

Eight Major League Soccer sides will have representatives on the team that will represent the US in this summer’s Gold Cup.  Bob Bradley announced the roster today featuring 12 MLS players and 11 from outside MLS.  The Gold Cup is the number one priority for Bob Bradley this summer, so this should be his top team.   The US won the Gold Cup in 2005.  All of the players listed as forwards come from Major League Soccer.

Chicago Fire vs Red Bulls Thursday Prediction

You understand that you should not expect great things from your team if I predict a victory for them here. I’ve only got one thursday prediction correct all year so far, so just assume the opposite.

My pick is going to go with the home team tonite, the New York Red Bulls. Sorry Red Bull fans.

Here is a commercial for the Red Bulls that I found on google video.

It is kinda a cool video but I don’t see that this would make anyone thing they gotta get out and go to a Red Bulls game. Wouldn’t some actual footage of some exciting moments from a game, or shots of an excited crowd be better? Maybe they would steal some video of a Toronto crowd. They guys juggling in the dark garage is neat, but not going to spark ticket sales I wouldn’t think.

Jeff Cunningham Alecko Eskandarian Swap

Jeff Cunningham is headed to Toronto FC and in return Alecko Eskandarian is going to Real Salt Lake.  This is a surprising trade to me.  I can’t imagine why Real Salt Lake would give up Jeff Cunningham.  Alecko is a great player, but for my money I don’t think this is an even swap.  I’d rather have Cunningham on my team, but I guess I wouldn’t complain about Alecko, he does have a much more enjoyable name to say.

I can’t be long, gotta get on to some hockey tonite.  go Ducks.

Guess Who The Player Of The Week Is

If 2 assists and a goal in a 4-0 pounding isn’t good enough for player of the week, Clint Mathis probably scored 4 unassisted goals with a couple of assists to boot.  Well that would be impressive, but it was Juan Pablo Angel who got the goal and 2 assists in only his 2nd game in Major League Soccer.  Along with all that and a 4-0 win, he has been named player of the week.  No big surprise there.  Well done Juan.  Watch out for Clint Mathis next week.

Major League Soccer In Minnesota

Aparently an announcement is going to be made about “Copa Minnesota” which is supposed to take place in October at the Metrodome.  This Copa Minnesota will feature the LA Galaxy along with another unspecified team.  If Beckham is on the roster that could draw a large crowd.  They are hoping to set the Minnesota attendance record which was 46 thousand and some back when Pele and the NY Cosmos played there.

BMO Field Needs Some Repair

The brand new BMO Field is in need of some repair before DC United visits on Saturday.  Fox Sports reported that 6 bolts from the stadium have been found by fans and turned in.  This could be from a capacity crowd bouncing up and down on the Stadium more than expected of a typical sports crowd, or another rumor was that construction workers just left some extra equipment laying around.

Either way TFC says the stadium will be in find shape for the game on Saturday.

New Look MLS Fan Blog

I changed up the theme a little bit last night. Is the new look better or worse than the old one?  Or do syndicate the MLS Fan Blog and never actually come to the site?

The Good Old Brimstone Cup

Tonite ESPN2 brings us the Brimstone Cup, which I hear is the oldest MLS rivalry or at least oldest one with a trophy.  I didn’t even know they had a trophy for this one before today.  I suppose this goes back to the days of Dallas Burn.  What would be a better title for that cup when it is the Fire versus the Burn?

Well anyway on to the prediction.  I suppose the Fire are real pissed off from being the first team to ever lose** to our newest expansion team.  I think they’ll probably end up taking it out on FC Dallas at home this evening and score themselves a 3-1 victory.

** I know it sucks to be the first team to let a new team win.  In high school my junior year we were pretty weak.  It was also the first year that our cross town private school had a varsity soccer team.  Their first win ever came at our expense.  I still think about that game today…
