New York Red Bulls Could Become New Jersey Red Bulls

A propsed bill would require the New York Red Bulls to drop New York from their name because they don’t actually play in New York.  The Red Bulls are not alone as this bill would also effect the New York Giants and New York Jets both of the National Football League.

It will be interesting to see if anything changes.  None of the 3 teams are interested in changing their name.  When are the Red Bulls getting their soccer specific stadium?  Will that be in New York or New Jersey?

My MLS Single Table

I noticed another popular MLS single table has not been updated in quite a while, so I created my own.

If you look at the official MLSnet.com standings you don’t get any idea of who is in the playoffs with their new top 2 seeds plus top 4 wildcard playoff system. Look at my single table and you immediately see who is in the playoffs and who is not.

I also created this table so that it can be added to any website. Go get the code and add it to your own website. I will try to keep it updated until I have the time to write a script that will automatically update the table.

Something Strange Is Going On

Excluding Chicago Fire an expansion team should not be expected to good their first season in play, so lets pretend Toronto FC does not exist yet.  New York Red Bulls and Kansas City Wizards are on top of the east.  DC United and New England Revolution are on the bottom of the east.  FC Dallas and Chivas USA top the west right now.  FC Dallas maybe isn’t such a surprise, they did finish top of west last year but looked to be very weak at this years pre-season.  It is almost like we are in upside-down world.

I guess a lot of this could be changing up real soon as the Revolution are looking to be on their way to a 1-0 victory over FC Dallas and both Houston Dynamo and Chicago Fire have a chance to pick up some points later tonight.

Red Bulls Set Some Records In Victory Over FC Dallas

Tonight Ronald Waterreus set the MLS record for most consecutive shut out minutes to start an MLS career. Later in the game the Red Bulls captured the MLS record for longest shut out streak to start a season at 4 full games and counting. With their next game against Real Salt Lake they have a good chance of really extending this record quite a ways.

FC Dallas had about 2 or 3 times they looked dangerous and threatened Waterreus, otherwise the RBNY defense looked awfully good. The Red Bulls pretty much dominated almost the whole game. For me they look like they could be top class in the East this year. RBNY and Chivas USA have impressed me the most so far this season. How long until those 2 hook up?

And I finally get one right on the Thursday Night Predictions!

1 – 2

Thursday Nite Futbol Prediction April 26

Tonite the East leading New York Red Bulls travel to the West leading FC Dallas.  ESPN2’s coverage starts at 7pm central.

Both New York and Dallas are doing unexpectadly well so far this year, although the season is very young still.

I’m really liking NY right now,  but they should be without Clint Mathis and they are playing at Pizza Hut Park in Dallas, so it is gonna be a tough pick for me.

Last season FC Dallas won this matchup both times they met, so I’m sticking with the Red Bulls to take both this year as they have already beaten FC Dallas 3-0.  I imagine the Red Bulls will continue their shut out streak tonite and enjoy another shut out victory over FC Dallas, but only score 2 goals this time.  So that is the prediction: NYRB 2 – 0 FC Dallas.  Even without Mathis Bruce will get the result he wants.

Toronto’s BMO Field Will Not Have Real Grass

Toronto FC’s BMO Field has announced that they will install FieldTurf in BMO field so that the field can be used 365 days a year. The New England Revolution also play on FieldTurf at Gilette Stadium.

A lot of big name European teams use FieldTurf for practice fields. My old high school now plays its home games on FieldTurf, and although I’ve never been on it myself I’ve heard that it is really nice, probably better than natural grass.

What do you think about a game field using artifical grass?

Wizards Bounce Back With Impressive Win

Well the score was impressive, that is really all I got out of the MLSnet.com match tracker.

After a very impressive season opening win in DC the Wizards dropped out of the US Open Cup to RSL and then went into Chicago and lost there.  Tonite they came back strong with a 3 – 0 victory over very unimpressive thus far Toronto FC.  I hope those Toronto fans are gonna stick with thier team through the bad as well as the good.

The Juice (Eddie Johnson) got back on the score sheet and now has equaled his goal tally from last season.

Andy Herron Finally Punished For Elbow

Andy Herron gave Jay Heaps a vicious elbow to the head that was missed by the referee in last weeks edition of Thursday Night Futbol on ESPN2 when the New England Revolution and Columbus Crew played to a 2-2 draw.

Although the ref didn’t see the incident, MLS has reviewed the video and laid the smack down on Herron. He got a $3,000 fine and four game suspension. Eric Wynalda would have suspended him for at least 6 weeks.

Here is a low quality video of the event that I was able to find on YouTube:

Galaxy Advance In US Open Cup

The Columbus Crew are out of the US Open Cup at the hands of the Galaxy.  Landon Donovan hooked up with Nate Jaqua for Jaquas first goal of the season and the game winner in the 1-0 victory for the Galaxy.

The Crew suffer the same fate as the Kansas City Wizards already have this year dropping out of the USOC early.  Maybe it will allow them to focus on league play a little bit more.  If last year is any sign of things to come, both of these teams will need that extra time to focus on league play.

Anything Beckham Does Gets Attention

Usually I wouldn’t even think again about stupid stuff like this, but the first 3 paragraphs really make me wonder what the hell they are thinking.  Someone took a picture of David Beckham wearing a Cincinnati Reds baseball cap.  The Sun says that must be “really difficult for hardcore LA Galaxy fans to swallow“, and that “it’s like a Liverpool fan wearing a rugby shirt from a Manchester team“.

I wonder how the hardcore Galaxy fan really feels about this?  I have to think that if I were a hardcore Galaxy fan I’d feel the same as I do without being a hardcore Galaxy fan.  I don’t care.  Besides me not caring what Beckhams wears, other than what jersey he is wearing on game day, I hardly see Cincinnati and the big rivals of LA.  Maybe there is some big rivalry there that I’m not aware about, but I doubt it.

What do Galaxy fans think?
